Job Description

The  Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is searching for an organized, creative, and committed assistant multimedia editor to help shape our coverage of existential threats.

The  Bulletin 's new assistant multimedia editor will be a quality public-interest journalist with training and experience in the full array of techniques and software used to present information on the internet. They will collaborate with an award-winning editorial staff to bring high quality, authoritative, and accessible audio and video programming, data visualization, interactive graphics, and in-depth magazine-style articles to a fast-growing audience hungry for trustworthy information about major global threats. This is a telecommuting position.

The  Bulletin is an all-digital magazine, and successful candidates will have experience with Web and mobile content management systems, a knack for social networking, and familiarity with multimedia software, including audio and video editing programs.

The  Bulletin 's authors include leading scientists and experts in their fields, which include: nuclear energy and nuclear weapons; the fossil fuel use that drives climate change; a wide range of biological threats, including genetic editing, synthetic biology, and pandemics; and an array of other technologies—including, prominently, artificial intelligence—that could, if misused, threaten humanity on a global scale. The assistant multimedia editor will work closely and collaboratively with the multimedia editor, other editors who direct coverage in our four verticals, the editor in chief, and outside journalists and experts to create compelling multimedia presentations that are accessible and useful to policy makers and lay audiences. All candidates must have an interest in the issues that we cover and national and international affairs generally. Experience in these fields is a definite advantage, but not required. All candidates must have excellent general journalism skills and the ability to work with high-profile writers and top experts. All our editors are also expected to create their own content for the  Bulletin .

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. Candidates must hold a degree in journalism, graphic design, or other relevant discipline or profession; study in international affairs, public policy, or related discipline a plus.
  • Minimum of three solid years of journalism experience required.
  • An understanding of WordPress or a similar content management system is a plus.
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite and other multimedia software is required, as is a solid presence in social media.
  • Proficiency with common office productivity software (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Office 365) is required.
  • We are looking for a team player who is flexible and comfortable with multi-tasking.

The  Bulletin has a relatively small staff of brilliant, highly educated over-achievers; the assistant multimedia editor we hire will also have these qualities. Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a telecommuting position, but preference will be given to residents of Washington, DC, Chicago, and New York City.

All inquiries will be held in strict confidence. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please send your résumé, a cover letter, and three published samples of your work; please type “assistant editor/multimedia” in the subject line. Your cover letter should explain your experience, and your understanding and interest in the issues that we cover.

The  Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, ancestry, color, religion, gender, age, marital status, sexual orientation, national origin, medical condition, disability, veteran status, union membership or activity or any other basis protected by law.
